"One night, when little Giana from Milano was fast asleep, she had a strange dream. Everybody dreams weird things at night , but no-one will have experienced situations like Giana is about to. Giana suddenly finds herself in a strange mysterious world, where everything is completely different. Gravity has almost disappeared - sometimes one feels like flying away - and everywhere there are unexplainable buildings and structures. Old grottos and deserted castles seems to hide lots of secrets, and frightning and hideous creatures appear. This wouldn't be too bad, except that Giana can't leave this world unless she finds the magic, hugh diamond. So, she starts searching for this wonderful jewel. However, she is not totally alone, for her little sister Maria can dream too." - Description from the original cartridge box. Softgold/Rainbow Arts - 1987

No! It's not porn! It is actually a game that became so legendary because of it exceptional similarity to the Super Mario Bros. game, during Nintendo's NES era. When it was released on the market that is.
I barely knew anything about this game until I heard from friends they liked or oved it. I didn't investigate further into it until I heard the music being played by the very band I like: "Machinae Supremacy". That's why I decided to make a drawing of this unusual game.

Also I tried to practice cellshading technic on this one. That's why the low level of softness if you, the observer, started to wonder...

I played that when I was little.

On my comodor64.
THOSE WERE THE GOOD TIMES, MATE!

also, if your interested (and Im mostly sure that you are /not/) I had a game where donald ducks nefews collected trash and sorted fruit to make money to buy toys, and a barbie game where I drove around getting ready for my date with ken, and even the classic "below the root". THat game freaks me out to this day.

By the way, nice picture :D

Yeah, those old games were all weird and creepy compare to the standards today :D

So THAT'S what this pic was. That song is awesome btw, but awfully hard to play..

My judging is as follows: you did a good coloring job with the cell shading, shawdows seem to be in the right places and you even did two tones of shading. What I'm a little worried about is the color theme. It looks a little incoherent and there are too many heavily saturated colors that all try to steal the show. It makes it hard for the eyes to settle down on a specific detail, especially on the girls which are the main focus of the pic. A good thing would have been to lower the intensity of the colors on the backgrounds, or anything non-living, to give the characters more space to live out their thing.

But all in all, damn good job. You know what pic I'm waiting to see colored from you.

Well I am after all digitally colorblind, and why it is such high incoherent with the colors is because it is a cellshaded illustration with three layers. Normally it should only be two layers; the ground and the shadow. Not the ground, the shadow and something between, which increased the chosen selection of colors, making it appear with higher contrast.
But I can agree with the background trying to fuse with the characters in the center. It is rather difficult to focus on detail when the background tries to, however, I tended not to try to "kill" the background into making it too dead or too colorless because the very castle plays a special role in the game, aswell the bloblike character in the background. So that's the reason why they are brightfully colored as the rest.

This is my first try so... I didn't expect any mad coloring skillz from my side either. And I probably won't do it again. XP
:iconrither:
Well if you don't try it again, you certinally WON'T get any colring skills anyway. Your funeral. :P

Meh, I can live with that. XP
No seriously, working with a trackball, or computer mouse won't work on a longshot. That's why I considering giving the digital coloring a break, and focus on traditional inking and coloring with markers, till I collect enough funds for a wacom board or something similar. =P

I just now heard of this game, lol. Wonderful picture! I really love it ^_^
:iconcursedchimera:
Thank you, this game is easily missed because of it's history, but hardly forgotten once experienced on the screen. =)
